Overview

The Notley Moontower Ball is Austin’s flagship gala for recognizing social impact. After its inaugural year in 2022, our team wanted to continue the event’s upward trajectory and produce a more effective funnel toward attendance for the upcoming year. We decided an independent website was the key to unlocking funding and attendance goals.

Approach

Our small but mighty team of two (Myself and Designer Rachel) approached the site development using the design sprint method. We met every morning for ~four weeks. Here’s how those weeks went:

  • WEEK 1: We took all the previous data from past events, plus conversations with leadership - and gathered it into a single excel sheet for data visualizations. We printed a mountain of charts, posted them around the tiny meeting room we commandeered as a “war room” - and got to work.
  • WEEK 2: With a foundation of knowledge given to us from our data - we whiteboarded user personas and journeys that aligned both with leadership expectations and prospective outcomes.
  • WEEK 2 CNTD: We aligned those personas/journeys with (sketched - on the whiteboard) wireframes and mockups, exchanging ideas for web flow, design, animation, and copy. We got the larger marketing team involved here, gathering their input on our potential menus and pages.
  • WEEK 3: Once translated digitally into Figma, the wireframes and mockups were ready to be populated with copy! I wrote copy for each menu, then each page, working with the designer to make qualified UX decisions along the way. We started on the board with copy - then digitized it.
  • WEEK 4: The designer and I continued to meet every morning, fleshing out the site on Figma, tweaking design and copy as a team. (This portion included an animated discussion regarding the size of navigation icons, and another on the use of the word “illuminate” - which was … illuminating. ha ha)
  • Bonus: Our leadership stakeholders were able to access our work beginning Week 3, and we encouraged them to provide feedback at the end of each week.
